A native of New Orleans, Dean has lived in Texas, Mississippi, Germany, Georgia, and New York, then settled in Maine in 1980. He is a graduate of the Henry Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia, where he majored in broadcasting and film, and acquired a life-long passion for still photography. After a brief post-college stint realizing a childhood dream by working on the Georgia Railroad, Dean turned his attention to a full-time career in photography, beginning in the late seventies.

His early years in the image-making business included two years working for well-known New York photographer Robert Lorenz, three years as photojournalist for the Syracuse New Times, and work as a stringer for the Associated Press. Dean is a recipient of a Light Work Grant for his photo/writing essay of world welterweight boxing champion Billy Backus' quest for a second title; that project, Journey to the Mountain, was made into a television documentary using still photographs, and was shown throughout the U.S. on public television.

After initially concentrating on editorial work, which included assignments for Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Reports, Fortune, Forbes, and many other national publications, Dean expanded into commercial photography. His work has taken him across the country, photographing for clients in manufacturing, engineering, transportation, finance, health care, education and media. Digital is Dean's preferred medium these days, but he also works happily with film, in 35mm and medium formats. He maintains a stock photo library with a concentration on Maine scenes, as well as foreign travel, transportation, sports, and many other subjects. Well known throughout New England, he is a Contributing Photographer for Down East Magazine. A natural story-teller and traveler, Dean is most drawn to corporate annual report photography on location. His clients have included some of Maine's largest and most-respected companies and institutions, and companies scattered throughout the United States and abroad. Recently, he built a spacious new studio to better serve his customers.

Dean occasionally exhibits his landscape and fine art work, selling limited edition prints. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Portland Museum of Art.

Married to the same wonderful woman, Marilyn Gilkey, a registered nurse, for the last thirty-three years, Dean loves traveling with his wife and friends, cruising his sailboat along the Maine coast, playing his guitar, or just lying on the couch watching Formula One auto racing. He dabbles in painting and writing, speaks German, and is nuts about Maggie the cat.
